The Best App Ever Awards were created by 148 Apps to celebrate and honor the best iPhone apps and games available, as chosen by users, along with iPhone bloggers and industry people. Their goal is to help publicize the very best apps available, not just the best-selling apps.

Final voting for all categories was open during the month of January. Winners (one for each category, including Best Word Game) will be announced on February 10th at the 2010 Macworld Expo in San Francisco.

If you are a fan of word games for the iPhone than you may want to give a new game a spin. I mean that literally! As previously reported, the original maker of WORD SPIN, Geospace, has teamed up with developer RogueSheep to offer their next generation version of the challenging word game.

The goal of the game is to line up three or more letters in sequence to create the most words possible, including words within words. Each spin wheel has a different combination of up to ten letters. Each letter has a displayed points value while vowels (A,E,I,O and U) do not have any value. This should be familiar to Scrabble players out there. Adding a little more complexity to the game is the fact that spin wheels can be moved at the beginning of a round.

The mobile version of WORD SPIN has the three ways to play. The first mode I started out in was Practice for obvious reasons. After selecting Practice you are presented with a screen which asks you how many wheels you would like. You can choose from three to eight wheels after which you will be presented with the purpose of the Practice mode, information about wheel actions, and basic rules.

Once you have moved wheels and spun letters to form a word you tap the top of the screen to start the scoring phase. Using the iPhone touch screen you highlight letters to form words. When you come to the end of a word you tap the last letter again to score points. In other words, to receive a score from “NEW” I have to tap N, E and W then W again. To form another word I go through the same process. From NEW I was able to find NE so I tapped N and E and E again. Be careful not to submit something that is not a word. The game has a built-in dictionary. If the word is not in the dictionary you will actually have points subtracted from your score. When you are finished you simply tap the top of the screen to see your final score.

In addition to the final score, an itemized list is shown of what each word was worth in value. By default, you are also presented with how many other words you missed and what those words would have been worth. You can even view the missed words so you can improve your score next time which is why you should begin playing the game in Practice mode until you are confident you know how to play.

The next mode, Solitaire, allows you to retain scores and submit them to a local or global leader board. Considering some of the scores on the Global Leader Board I think I can honestly say I will not be on there anytime soon. When you think you have begun to submit some respectable scores it is time to challenge someone.

In Challenge mode you create a challenge by typing your name, selecting the number of wheels and the number of rounds for the challenge. After selecting these options an email is automatically created for you to send to the person you want to play. When the recipient gets the email they can accept the challenge and launch WORD SPIN from within the email or they can startup WORD SPIN, select Challenge mode and type the challenge ID which is included in the email. The person with the highest score at the end of all rounds wins.

WORD SPIN is one of those games for the iPhone where you feel like you are trying to grow your knowledge and not just vegetate in front of a small screen. It is also a great game for young kids to play though you will need to take some time to show them how to move the word spinners and select words. Once they get the basics down they will really be able to challenge themselves, especially in Practice mode.
